There are lights on the shore. Small, low and warm orange, strung along the waterline on the far left — a settlement, already lit, with somebody in it.

Vinland is a longship at the *end* of a crossing rather than the middle of one: sail full, crew visible along the hull, shields ranged down the side, dragon prow and stern carved and catching the light. Vinland is the name the Norse gave the land they reached across the Atlantic five hundred years before anyone else managed it — a coast with wild grapes and good timber, written up in two sagas and then more or less abandoned. There is a turf settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows that proves they were there. We painted the moment that story is actually about: not the discovery, not the claim, just a ship coming in at the end of a long crossing toward somewhere with the lamps already lit.
