The candles are already burning down, the wax has run and set in long frozen drips, the herbs have been hung to dry, and the runes have been cut into the bone by hand — dozens of them, in vertical columns down the face and the long nasal bone of a horned ram skull.

Standing on top of it, entirely at home, a raven with blue-black lacquered feathers, facing right into the shadow. Behind, a runic panel in near-black with faint gold marks. Dried brown botanicals hang down on both sides and pile at the base. Four thick black candles burn low around it.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

• The runes are cut *into* the skull, not printed on it — dozens of Elder Futhark characters in vertical columns running down the face and the long nasal bone, catching the candlelight at their edges.
• The ram skull is the centre of gravity: heavy ridged horns curling wide on both sides, bone darkened and worn, sitting square on a scarred wooden surface.
• The raven is lacquer-black with a blue sheen through the mantle, standing high on the skull and facing right into the dark. Every covert is individually painted.
• The candles are doing the lighting and the storytelling. Four thick black pillars burned low, wax run down in long frozen drips — a dark candlelit norse gothic print where the ritual is clearly already underway.
• Dried brown botanicals hang from above on both sides and gather at the base, with a carved dark frame at the left and a faint gold-marked runic panel behind.

The valravn comes from Danish ballads rather than the Eddas — a raven that fed on a fallen king on the battlefield and did not stay an ordinary bird afterwards. Depending on the version it gains knowledge, or a man's shape by night, or a great deal of trouble for whoever meets it. We liked that it is a folk story rather than a myth: something people told each other about a bird they had actually seen doing something they did not want to think about.
