No vase. No table. No horizon. Umbra is dark floral wall art in the Dutch manner, where the flowers simply arrive out of absolute black and every petal edge has to earn its own light. Plum parrot tulips with frilled, streaked petals at the top. A vast magenta-crimson peony at the centre. A deep-red rose whorled tight beneath it, an aubergine orchid below that, hellebores and hydrangea threaded through, and a long tassel of burgundy amaranth falling down the left side.

The species are real and specific, which is the whole difference between this and every generic dark-floral print. A large dark floral canvas on a black background for the bedroom — and the piece in our range that most convincingly passes for a painting.

PRINT OPTIONS

You can bring this piece home in the format that suits your space:

• POSTER PRINT — professional-grade 200 GSM matte photo paper, UV-resistant archival inks, shipped rolled in a protective tube and ready to frame your way.
• STRETCHED CANVAS — gallery-wrapped over a sturdy 1.25" frame with a black border for extra depth and contrast, hanging hardware pre-installed.
• FRAMED CANVAS — your stretched canvas finished in a solid wood frame in your choice of colour, with hardware already fitted. The frame adds roughly 1/2" on each side.

Every format uses fade- and UV-resistant archival inks on sustainably sourced materials, so the blacks stay deep and the jewel tones keep their saturation.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

• The black ground does the work. There is no vessel, no surface and no light source you can name — the arrangement emerges from pure black, which is exactly why the lit edge of every petal reads so sharply.
• Every flower is a named one: plum and violet parrot tulips with streaked, frilled petals; a huge ruffled magenta peony; a tightly whorled deep-red garden rose; slate-purple hellebores with pale gold stamens; a long cascade of burgundy amaranth; dark violet hydrangea; and an aubergine cymbidium orchid with a cream-and-gold speckled throat.
• The orchid at the base is the detail that stops people. It is the only flower in the composition with a pale centre, and it pulls the eye straight down through the arrangement.
• Plum, burgundy and aubergine is a scheme people shop by name — a plum and burgundy Dutch still life print belongs with velvet, brass, aged wood, dark plaster and every material that understands richness.
• It works in a bright room as readily as a dark one. Against warm white the black ground reads as a window; against a dark wall it disappears into the room and only the flowers remain.
• Scale suits it. At 20 × 30 or 24 × 36 a moody orchid and peony wall art piece stops reading as a print and starts reading as something commissioned.

A WORD FROM US

*Umbra* is Latin for shadow — specifically the deepest part of one, where no light gets in at all. That is the background here, and it is not a neutral choice: the Dutch painters used a black ground because it forced every other decision to be about light. We took their method and pushed the palette as far down as it would go. Burgundy instead of scarlet, aubergine instead of violet, a peony that is almost black at the base of every petal. The flowers are entirely real. The mood is something else. Explore the rest of our gothic wall art collection for more, and reach out any time — we're always happy to help you find your fit.

Please note: due to differences in monitor settings and display calibration, actual print colors may vary slightly from what you see on screen.
