That single detail is the whole god. When the gods needed to bind Fenrir and the wolf would not accept the chain without a pledge, Tyr put his hand in its mouth — knowing exactly what it would cost, because the binding had to hold and somebody had to pay for it. He was the only one who volunteered.

He stands here on black rock in a torn dark cloak carrying a large gold Tiwaz rune on the shoulder, a spear held in his remaining hand, a rune mark cut into his forehead and scarring across one cheek. Behind him, filling the upper sky, the enormous spectral shape of a grey wolf looms out of the storm cloud with its eyes lit. Lightning breaks at the right. Runestones stand in the foreground, their carved Tiwaz arrows glowing gold.

The gods told Fenrir the ribbon was a game and asked him to try breaking it. He was not stupid. He said he would allow it only if one of them put a hand in his jaws as surety, and there was a long silence, and then Tyr stepped forward. The binding held. The wolf took the hand. Nobody thanked him properly in any surviving text. We think that is the single most decent thing anyone does in the entire mythology, and it seemed worth a wall.
