Two ravens, photographed rather than drawn, standing watch on a stone that stood in this valley a long time before anyone thought to carve it.

The near bird is close enough to study — every barb of every feather picking up the last hard light before the sky closes over, one eye catching a gleam of it. Behind, a second raven sits lower on the stone, angled outward, watching the far ridge instead of the camera. Between and around them a broad knotwork medallion runs down the stone's face, framed on both sides by tight columns of cut runes, moss grown into the grooves where the carving is oldest.

The land does the rest of the work. A still lake sits below in the middle distance, a line of dark pine down to the water, a lone rowan gone copper at the near edge, and behind all of it a wall of grey mountains with old snow still lying in the high gullies. The cloud above has just started to break — a hard band of light forcing through where the sky was solid a moment ago.

This one is built like a wildlife photograph, not painted, and staged outdoors on real-looking ground — no line art, no tabletop, no altar. Just two birds, an old stone, and weather moving in.

Standing stones like this one turn up all over the old Norse world, most of them raised for somebody who died a long way from home, cut with whatever the family could afford — a name, a boast, sometimes real knotwork if there was a mason good enough for it. Ravens never needed summoning to sit on them. They already went where the dead went, for reasons that had nothing to do with religion. We liked the idea of two of them treating the monument as exactly what it now is: a good high perch with a view of the water.
