One light, one subject, and a great deal of black.

A ram skull lies on its side against a near-black ground, bone-white and cream, one enormous ridged horn curling toward the camera and the long muzzle running off to the right. Runes have been **scratched** into the frontal bone — thin, shallow, barely inked, the work of a hand rather than a chisel — with a small X further down. Pale dried blooms and seed heads are tucked into the curl of the horn and packed along the jaw. A single feather rests behind.

Standing high on the skull, in profile, facing left: a raven. Every feather on its back catches the light. It is the only true black in the frame.

Nothing else. No candles, no props, no scene — just a studio, a single source, and two objects photographed properly.

PRINT OPTIONS

You can bring this piece home in the format that suits your space:

• POSTER PRINT — professional-grade 200 GSM matte photo paper, UV-resistant archival inks, shipped rolled in a protective tube and ready to frame your way.
• STRETCHED CANVAS — gallery-wrapped over a sturdy 1.25" frame with a black border for extra depth and contrast, hanging hardware pre-installed.
• FRAMED CANVAS — your stretched canvas finished in a solid wood frame in your choice of colour, with hardware already fitted. The frame adds roughly 1/2" on each side.

Every format uses fade- and UV-resistant archival inks on sustainably sourced materials, so the cream holds its warmth against the black.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

• It is a photograph, not a scene. A **raven on a ram skull studio still life print** with one light source, black velvet behind, and nothing else asking for attention — which is why it reads as art rather than as themed decor.
• The lighting is the craft. Hard side light rakes across the horn's ridges and the raven's back, then falls off into complete black at the edges. Nothing is filled in.
• The skull lies on its side rather than facing forward, which is unusual and gives the composition its diagonal — the horn curls in toward you, the muzzle runs away to the right.
• The runes are **scratched**, not carved: fine, shallow, uneven, the way somebody actually marks bone. There is a small X low on the muzzle that most people find on a second look.
• Cream, bone and black is a restrained palette that hangs in a minimal room — a **cream and black gothic photography canvas** works on a white wall, in a gallery wall of prints, or anywhere the rest of a dark collection would be too much.
• Pale dried blooms are tucked into the horn curl and packed along the jaw, with a single feather behind — the only softness in the frame, and the detail that keeps it from being cold.

A WORD FROM US

Hel got the half of the dead that Odin did not want — the ones who died of illness and old age rather than on a field somewhere, which was most people. Her hall is described as cold and rather well organised. We named this one for her because it is the quietest thing we make: no fire, no battle, no ceremony. Just bone, a bird, some dried flowers somebody put there, and the light going out at the edges of the frame. Explore the rest of our Norse and Viking collection for more, and reach out any time.

Please note: due to differences in monitor settings and display calibration, actual print colors may vary slightly from what you see on screen.
