The service is over and nobody has put the lights on.

Two pale shafts come down through the high clerestory windows and cross the nave at an angle, thick with dust, catching the ribs of the vaulting on the way through. Everything they do not touch is teal-green stone — arcade after arcade of it, receding into a haze so deep the far end of the building is barely legible. A single lit window glows small and distant at the crossing.

To the right, carved dark oak: choir stalls, a gallery, canopies worked in tracery, all of it in warm brown against the cold. Light pools amber on the flagstones at the foot of the stalls. That is the only warmth in the frame, and it is a long way off.

Painterly rather than photographic — the whole surface worked in fine directional strokes, so the stone reads as brushwork rather than masonry.
