Here she is mid-collection. A winged white horse comes out of the frame toward you with its wings spread the full width of the canvas, mane and tail streaming, bridle and breastplate worked in gold knotwork. She rides in silver-and-gold filigree armour and a winged helm, blonde hair flying, a gold spear raised overhead. Laid across the horse in front of her she carries a fallen warrior — bearded, armoured, head fallen back, one arm hanging loose — steadied with her free hand. Behind them a sunburst breaks through towering cloud, and the spires of a golden hall rise on the horizon.

In the sources they are not decorative — they are functionaries with a grim and specific job, riding out over a field that has stopped moving and picking who is worth the hall. Half go to Odin and half to Freyja, and nobody consults the dead about it. We painted the moment of collection rather than the battle, because there is something genuinely tender in it: whatever else is happening, somebody has come to carry him home.
