They stand in a cluster on the left — brass candlesticks at different heights, tapers and pillars, each one carrying a great frozen cascade of black wax that has run down the shaft, over the holder and onto the table. Six flames, all lit, all steady.

To the right of them a **skull** rests on the tabletop in three-quarter view, polished and warm-toned, catching the light along the brow and cheekbone with the cranial sutures clearly drawn.

Between the two, a **grimoire lies open** across the front of the frame — heavy vellum pages printed with a circular astrological diagram on the left and a bordered botanical plate on the right, both worked in fine black line, the paper foxed and soft-edged with age.
