A black cat sits upright on a broad stone sill inside a Gothic cathedral, in perfect profile, chin lifted, looking up and to the right at the light. Behind her, tall lancet windows in ranks — amber and gold glass with fine tracery — and a great rose window higher up on the left. Sun comes through them in soft diagonal shafts, catching the dust, and lands along her back and the line of her throat.

She is rimlit down the whole silhouette: ears, whiskers, chest, the curve of her tail wrapped round her paws. One ear is translucent where the light comes through it. Her eye is pale gold and entirely fixed on something above the frame.
