A WORD FROM US

Luca Ghini was a professor of botany in Bologna and Pisa in the early 16th century — and sometime around 1530, he had an idea that seems obvious in retrospect but had occurred to no one before: press a plant flat between sheets of paper, let it dry, and fix it to the page permanently. Before that, botanists either worked from living plants (which don't keep) or from centuries of copied descriptions (which accumulate errors until they become almost useless).

Ghini called the technique the "hortus siccus" — dry garden. The oldest surviving pressed botanical collection we know of dates to around 1558. Some of those specimens are still usable by scientists today.

Every time you press a flower or a leaf between the pages of a book — and almost everyone has done this at least once — you are continuing a 500-year-old tradition started by an Italian professor who simply wanted to remember exactly what autumn looked like.
